We felt so connected to the place and people simply because we were learning about it from an indigenous man and a local man whose father had originally pillaged the site, then received an education and became a tour guide instead. We were pleasantly surprised when our group ended up joining a wiwa group so that we could share a translator and chef. We chose Teyuna simply because their web page was a bit easier to navigate and they answered our many questions often within an hour. My friend and I had been between the Teyuna and Wiwa tours since they were locally owned and had more benefit for the indigenous and local people. In addition, we traveled alongside of other tour groups and got to know some of those trekkers as well so the trail was never lonely and since we went in the off season it also wasn't quite as crowded as it could have been. I was not as fit as the others in our group, and had to take it slower, but since we had a guide and an interpreter who also served as a guide, there was always one with me and with the rest of our group so we could all go at our own best pace. It was tough to turn a corner in the trail after climbing up up up, only to see another incline. Prepare yourself mentally! So much of the hike is mental. I hike around my home area but the terrain is nothing like this. The hike itself was tough.not technically, but. What an experience!
